Students recently had the opportunity to gain a valuable insight into life in the Army, thanks to a visit from Cpl Thomas Jones and two of his colleagues, all based at Fulwood Barracks.

The session provided a broad and informative overview of Army careers and helped challenge some common assumptions about what working in the Army involves.

Informative introduction to army roles

The day began with a 30-minute presentation led by Cpl Thomas Jones. It was extremely informative and gave students a clear understanding of the qualifications required for a range of different Army positions.

He explained the variety of roles available, including combat, engineering, medical and musical careers. A key message from the session was that the Army is far more diverse than many people realise and it is not solely focused on fighting or weapons-based roles.

Cpl Jones also spoke about pay progression and how individuals can move up through the ranks, offering students a clearer picture of long-term career development and opportunities within the Army.

Practical team challenge

The second part of the session involved a hands-on, problem-solving activity where students worked collaboratively as a team. They were challenged to complete a task that required careful planning, communication, and logical thinking.

The activity encouraged students to use their maths skills and working memory while working together under pressure to find effective solutions.

A valuable learning experience

Overall, the visit highlighted just how important it is for students to explore and understand different job roles early on. Opportunities like this help broaden horizons, challenge assumptions and show that there are many different pathways available depending on interests, strengths and skills.

The session not only provided insight into Army careers but also helped students develop key employability skills such as teamwork, communication and problem-solving.

It was an engaging and thought-provoking experience that encouraged students to think more widely about their future career options.
