A quiet beginning

When Mason first joined Progress Futures, everyday interactions felt overwhelming. During his first few months, he kept his hood up throughout the day, avoided conversations and found it difficult to engage with anyone beyond his mentor, Daniel. He often isolated himself from others and lacked the confidence to be himself. For Mason, this wasn’t simply about shyness; it reflected a young person who lacked confidence and didn’t yet feel comfortable enough to be himself.

Like many students in Progress Futures, Mason arrived needing far more than academic support. Before he could fully engage with learning, he first needed to feel safe, accepted and confident that he could build positive relationships without fear of judgement. The trusting relationship he built with Daniel became the foundation for the progress that followed.

Creating a safe space

We recognised that confidence isn’t built overnight. Rather than placing pressure on Mason to change, the focus was on creating an environment where he felt emotionally safe, understood and valued.

Through consistent support, positive relationships and patient encouragement, Mason gradually began to feel more comfortable engaging with staff and taking part in school life. The trusting relationship he initially built with one member of staff soon grew to include the wider team, allowing him to develop meaningful connections across our provision. Around six months after joining, his confidence greatly improved. He became more comfortable expressing himself positively, joining conversations and interacting with both staff and his peers.

Alongside this, Mason worked with Sophie, Communication and Language Specialist, through regular one-to-one sessions designed to strengthen his communication skills, social confidence and ability to navigate different perspectives. As his communication skills developed, Mason became increasingly willing to share his thoughts, participate in conversations and express his opinions respectfully.

Reflecting on Mason’s progress, Sophie said:

“The biggest change I’ve seen is Mason’s confidence to engage. He now comes to sessions positively, communicates openly and is much more comfortable expressing his thoughts and opinions. He’s developed stronger conversation skills and is becoming increasingly confident in building positive relationships with both staff and peers.”

Stepping forward with confidence

12 months after Mason joined Progress Futures, he has completely transformed.

He now attends lessons confidently, talks openly with members of staff and actively engages in school life. Through his communication sessions, he has become more confident explaining his ideas, listening to different viewpoints and developing the social skills needed to build positive relationships.

One of the most noticeable changes has been in how Mason sees himself. No longer hiding behind his hood, he now proudly shows his face and presents himself with a renewed sense of confidence. Mason describes himself as a completely different person. He feels confident talking to everyone around him and no longer feels the need to hide who he is.

Reflecting on his journey, Mason said:

“I feel so much more confident now and I can be myself again.”

His growing confidence is reflected not only in the positive relationships he has built, but also in his willingness to contribute, ask questions and express himself with confidence. While he continues to develop his communication skills and navigate different viewpoints, he now approaches these situations with far greater resilience and self-awareness than when he first joined.

Mason’s journey is a powerful reminder that success isn’t always measured by qualifications alone. Sometimes, the greatest achievement is seeing a young person rediscover their confidence, find their voice and believe in themselves again.

Below is a drawing created by Mason, capturing his journey and the progress he has made since joining Progress Futures.
