“At first, even a few minutes in a classroom felt like a big step but now it’s just part of my day.”

David, a Year 12 student at Progress Futures (sixth form provision at Progress Arc), has made a quiet but significant transformation over the past year. When he first joined, being in shared learning spaces felt overwhelming. He often worked 1:1 in a separate room and found it difficult to spend time in lessons with others.

With consistent support, patience, and encouragement, David began to take small steps, starting with just a few minutes in class. Over time, those minutes grew into longer periods, as his confidence slowly built.

Now, David is regularly taking part in lessons across a range of settings, including science labs, food rooms and PE, and rarely needs time away from the classroom. What once felt challenging has become part of his everyday routine.

Alongside this, he has made strong academic progress. He has improved his reading skills, achieved Level 2 certificates in First Aid and Food Hygiene, and is working towards his English and Maths qualifications. He has also successfully met his Speech and Language targets, helping him to communicate more confidently and work with greater independence.

David has a strong interest in history and a growing passion for finance. He has taken this beyond the classroom, independently exploring stock markets and cryptocurrency in his own time. A recent placement at Warrington Museum was a highlight for him, giving him the opportunity to engage with an area he enjoys and consider future pathways.

David is now more confident, more independent, and increasingly engaged in both his learning and his future. He is keen to build on these experiences and explore further opportunities linked to his interests.
